These are the best oranges!! Because of their thick skin, they're super easy to peel! The "top knot" acts as a tab to make the initial peel simple. They're also incredibly juicy and flavorful. I find them at Whole Foods between January and April. They're pretty expensive compared to most fruits, but they can be worth it, especially when emerging from a long winter.
Some history on the Sumo Citrus: it was cultivated in Japan in the 70's as a hybrid between Satsuma, Navel, and Mandarin varieties. The grower aspired to make the perfect citrus: delicious and easy to peel. It gained popularity in Japan before camimg to the US in 2011.
