Sabar Menanti IINasi PadangAnne的评论 (2020年7月10日)

I love nasi padang. It is so fun to look at the huge array of dishes and decide what to eat. The variety can be as many as thirty in Indonesia and twenty in Singapore.

Now that I am a vegetarian, I still go to feast my eyes. What I can order has dwindled. Vegetarians can still get at least four vegetarian dishes. Vegans may have only a couple without those made with eggs.

I just discovered this stall in a corner shop house at the junction between North Bridge Road and Jalan Kledek. Called Sabar Menanti ("wait patiently" in Malay). It was crowded at 4pm but the line moved very fast!

I hear it is a second outlet opened in 1997 helmed by the second and third generation of the original restaurant which opened in 1944.

This is probably the cheapest nasi padang stall in the Kampong Glam enclave. The taste can put up a good fight with the famous one nearby at Kandahar Street. It has a Sumatra, Indonesian, Chinese fusion, so it is localized and less spicy.

The vegan dishes I ordered are fried tofu tempeh with long beans, boiled cassava leaves and cabbage with coconut shreds. It is served over rice on a banana leaf.

The fried tofu, tempeh and long beans dish is not oily and has a spicy sweet chillie gravy. I like that it is not too sweet. But I can take more chillie heat. I understand patrons usually pile on curry and sambal belachan that complement it well. As a vegetarian, I can't take the curry is non-veg and sambal belachan has shrimp. But non spicy means we taste the ingredients better.

The boiled cassava leaves with coconut shreds on the other hand is super yummy. The toasted coconut shreds added texture and fragrance to the soft vegetables. So yummy I should have asked for more.

If you are vegetarian and not vegan, you can also add bergedel (potato patty), fried sunny side egg, salted egg and omelette.

If you are not fussy, you can get the sayur lodeh (cabbage curry) gravy, cabbage and tofu without the prawn and ikan bilis (anchovy) it is cooked in.

I love food served on banana leaf as it is environmentally friendly and the food soak up a yummy fragrance and taste too.
