This dish is on Umbra's regular menu and is the only vegan option under the "Mains" section. There's a vegan Mediterranean Bowl under the salads section that looks like it could be pretty filling too. The grilled asparagus and grilled bread are the default vegan sides. I liked this gnocchi more than the special dish Umbra created for the Vegan Chef Challenge. The sauce was comforting like a corn chowder. I was really impressed with the gnocchi. They were so pillowy soft. The corn was a nice touch. It's an unconventional dish, but I'm glad it's so creative. They could have just thrown a red sauce pasta on the menu and called it good for the vegan option. I'm so glad they didn't. The portion is a bit small and the price is pretty high at $26, but it is the least expensive main. I don't know if I'd make a special trip for this fish, but if you're looking for an upscale atmosphere in the Mill District and a place to have a couple fancy drinks, I'd check this out. We went to Milly's wine bar just after this and I felt that this was a good base for a wine night.
