Review of Hokkien Mee at D’Life Signature by starlight7

photo of D’Life Signature Hokkien Mee shared by @starlight7 on 22 Jul 2019 - review

The noodles was not fully cooked, which became more apparent as I chewed more of it. The sauce was alright, coating the noodles and making it bouncy.

Additions like tofu and vegetables were fresh but the bean shoots were underwhelming. Thry did not have crunch and felt stale.

It felt like they added in more noodles to sauce/vegetables/tofu to fill up my container. This felt chewy and bland after a while.

They were not very accomodating with my BYO container and the cashier quite rudely said she will just fit whatever will go into it or else I would have to pay $0.20 extra. This makes me feel their choice of vegetarian cuisine is motivated by some animal cruelty ethics but mainly for catering to a vegetarian audience. There is no regard for the environmental impact of plastic. This is quite a damper, especially at a time when environmentalism is becoming a growing global movement

r3ddrag0n :/ Such a shitty experience and service! I think it’s because the staff are normally non-vegetarians and they actually don’t care much about such stuff, especially since this outlet is under one of the biggest vegetarian restaurant/cafe group in Singapore, so it’s hard to get the right employees with Low pay. Please don’t let this experience discourage you from bring your own containers! Good job on your effort for the environment! Reply
starlight7 @r3ddrag0n Yes, this will definitely not deter me from the BYO idea. May I know which chain owns this restaurant? I think they are probably not used to special requests since they already have no onion/garlic which is quite a calculated move. However, being an FnB chain, intolerances, special diets etc. should be a part of staff training. 😕Reply
r3ddrag0n @starlight7 I’m not entirely sure what’s their name but I think it’s “Zi Zai Zhai Group”. They have many stores under different names too, like D’life, D’life Signature, Zi Zai Vegetarian, Zhenyi Veggie Place, True Veggie etc., all of them are vegetarian and serve Zi char style food. But the thing is the taste can vary a lot, even tho they use same ingredients. Same goes for service, really depends on the time, day and luck. I think maybe they don’t really pay their workers that well because I know most of the workers in one of the outlets decided to leave together and start up their own store nearby, after they left the food really went downhill for that outlet. starlight7 @r3ddrag0n Thanks. I feel they are not paid as well also. They wear T-shirts so it represents their brand but the kitchen looked small and quite untidy. I was surprised as they are rated "A" for hygiene. The chefs did not seem to have much space near the door since they are squeezed in with the waitressing staff. There was also a card with some items but it was written in Chinese so I unfortunately could not read it. The cashier seemd to be getting impatient so I didn't ask about those items.Reply
r3ddrag0n @starlight7 yep maybe that’s why they are impatient/unfriendly :/ Reply
lou Ah that's a pity! :(Reply
starlight7 @lou Thanks for viewing this review! There is more to my experience but I didn't want to make this review too negtive. 😐Reply
lou oh no :( you should feel free to share and warn other people if you had a really bad experience :OReply
starlight7 @lou I did send in feedback via the option provided on this app. Hopefully that spurs them on to improve the cashier services. Do I expand on this review here?Reply
lou @starlight7 oh yes if you've left private feedback it will be passed on to the restaurant :) then it's up to you if you'd like to elaborate further! Reply
