I really wanted to try a shampoo BAR, but I’m not sure how to travel with that without making a huge mess of things with it.

Not sure in the US but in europe they sell special travel cases with the shampoo bars. They are pretty good. For your short hair it would be great. I found getting enough lather with long hair a bit of a chore😅
The Container Store has anything you could desire in small tin boxes. I’ve been using shampoo bars since they invented them. Lush sells them and may have containers too. Also you can slice off a small portion for travel and carry it in a baggie.
