Liquorice is a treat but it has some good benefits too. It contains antioxidants. A small 50g bag of liquorice sweets has 4mg iron. We need iron to make hemoglobin a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles. So while I was chewing away at these soft log shaped pieces of liquorice today while watching an excellent film at the cinema, I was also filling up the supply of globins!
