I never liked dairy cream cheese. The thick texture + tangy flavor always gave me the ick. I did, however, like it when a bunch of sugar was added and it was used as a frosting 🧁
As a vegan, I’ve revisited cream cheese and I really only like Kite Hill as a spread, probably due to the whipped texture and less potent tang. I do, however don’t mind using other options in baking so that’s how I used this Trader Joe’s cream cheese.
Flavor:
I tried this on it’s own and cringed - which means that if you like dairy cream cheese you may really like this one 😊
Texture:
It is VERY thick. If you let it sit out for a bit it is easier to work with.
Application:
This worked well in frosting for cinnamon rolls. Once let to warm up a bit it didn’t take that long to whip up. Made a very thick but nice frosting.
It didn’t work quite as well in the oven. I followed a recipe for vegan pumpkin cheesecake bread that had a cream cheese stripe in the center. The recipe and last photo is from Floured Frame. Unfortunately the cream cheese melted down more than expected and reformed as a sheer layer instead of the pretty white layer that the recipe creator had. The loaf is still delicious (and is nearly gone so that’s why my sad photo is even sadder hahahaha) but not very aesthetically pleasing.
This cream cheese alternative costs $2.99 for 8 oz, which is a fabulous price! I think that if you used to like dairy cream cheese and or you’re going to use it for frosting it’s worth the buy and the wait on the counter.
