Finally tried Chen's vegan rendition of mapo tofu! I got Level 1 spice (normal). The flavors of the tofu were somewhat spicy and numbing but not very strong. I like my mala/mapo sauce spicy, salty and numbing, but this didn't hit all the notes well (Maybe I'll try a higher level next time). The noodles was very clumpy and didn't absorb or mix well with the tofu sauce, so I had to mix everything very thoroughly before taking this photo. Also, the portion is relatively small for the price (paid almost $15).

I ordered a side dish of seasonal vegetables to go with my tofu don. The cashier kindly took care to ask me if I wanted to have the seasonal vegetables veganised - since the original dish uses oyster sauce. That was really nice! I said yes. The final dish was decent, and very fragrant with sesame oil. Hard to taste it through the Mapo Tofu sauce though! 🥲

I was excited to see that this new branch of Chen's Mapo Tofu open up in Nex - they have a vegetarian Mapo Tofu option that can be had with rice or noodles. I chose the rice option at spicy level one. Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of the flavours - it was way too "ma" (numbing) after I'd dialled down the spiciness level, and there wasn't enough rice to offset the rather rich, salty sauce. Possibly because the tofu was served on top of the rice, so I couldn't balance out the flavours by myself since even the rice was drenched in sauce.
