My family celebrated my brother’s birthday at The Keg (not my restaurant choice), but at least a couple vegan items were listed in the menu. Unfortunately, my preferred choice (Vegetarian Chipotle Meatloaf) was unavailable. According to the waiter, the menu will change at the end of October, and he hinted the vegan meatloaf would no longer be available. So by default, I chose the only other vegan option - the Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie.
Despite the word “Vegetarian” in the name of the dish, the menu indicated it was vegan, not vegetarian. I guess the corporate office did not want to anger its loyal meat-eating customers with the explicit use of the word “Vegan”.
Anyways, the Shepherd’s Pie was very good. Mind you, I rarely eat it to really know a good or bad version of Shepherd’s Pie. But I enjoyed it. Under the top layer of mashed potatoes were a mix of carrots, peas, mushrooms, green lentils, chickpeas in a very flavourful red wine gravy. I just wished it was bigger.
This dish came with a beautifully vibrant garden salad with a Dijon vinaigrette dressing. I confirmed the dressing was also vegan. The salad could have had more dressing, but I didn’t ask for more.
This dish was $26.
I would gladly choose this menu option again if I returned to The Keg, although it would not be a restaurant I would freely choose to patronize. I’m certainly glad it’s available on the menu.
