How I had never been here before is a complete mystery to me. This bowl was excellent — tasty, generously portioned, and very affordable. Although they have meat and dairy on the menu, the vast majority of their toppings are plant-based, and they have some of the best vegan (and #glutenfree) labeling I’ve seen anywhere, which takes the guesswork out of ordering.
This chain operates counter-serve (basically “Chipotle-style,”) allowing for customization as your order moves down the line. They only have one vegan protein — so you must like #falafel ($11.95) — but I thought it was awesome that all of their serving options (pita, wrap, salad, rice, freekeh, and couscous) are vegan and priced the same! My #rice bowl came with four large falafel, which you can barely see because I absolutely smothered them in toppings (everything except avocado is no extra charge, and all are vegan except for the tzatziki and feta!) The falafel were good but not the best I’ve had. Here’s what I piled on top: #hummus, garlic sauce, sumac cauliflower (my personal favorite!,) eggplant ragout, wild arugula, garbanzo beans, tomato-cucumber salad, diced beets, and tahini sauce. #eattherainbow That wasn’t even all of the toppings available — there’s also onions and pickled things for those seeking more pungency, as well as a handful of spicy sauces. Each order even comes with a complimentary cup of lentil soup. Despite working up quite an appetite while hiking, I only ate about half the bowl — it was a lot of food!
It came out to $13 with tax, which was reasonable considering I basically got two lunches out of one bowl. The staff were really friendly and helpful as well; they made small talk and recommended their favorite add-ons and condiments. SAJJ has several locations around the Bay Area, and I’ll definitely visit again for convenient, nourishing, and delicious #mediterranean.
