If you’ve ever looked for gluten-free vegan bread, you’ll know this isn’t always an easy task. Most GF breads contain egg white, so while there’s now a significant selection of GF options when you’re shopping (which wasn’t the case some years ago – and not even that long ago), if you rule out those containing egg, the choices are more limited.
Which brings me to Schär, with a choice of white bread or vitality (note, the seeded loaf isn’t vegan as it contains honey). I wasn’t sure what to write about this one as it’s very literally our daily bread. We buy it from our local Tesco, and that’s key as with something as basic as bread, you do want to be able to pick it up locally.
But is it good? Well, yes and no. At £3 for a small 350g loaf, this is over-priced, although GF products come with a premium (and they shouldn’t when people are choosing gluten-free for health/intolerance reasons). But each slice is *small*, and some loaves are quite holey, so those slices are even smaller. I fondly remember having big chunky sandwiches with bread you’d slice into thick wedges. This loaf is pretty much the opposite of that.
And, as untoasted bread, it isn’t that good. Clearly, this is subjective as someone else might love the flavour of this bread as a sandwich, but, for me, it needs to be toasted, when it’s a good base for hummus or sliced avocado or, as here, your classic beans on toast. There’s a nutty hint to the flavour, thanks presumably to the use of chestnut flour, which is nice.
Is this the bread that I’d choose if I wasn’t on a low-gluten diet? No. But – and this is a big but – in terms of digestion, this bread is very well tolerated. If, like me, you’re reliant on all your basics being GF (bread, pasta, cereals etc), then this is a good option to have in the cupboard. I just wish it wasn’t so over-priced for its size.
