I was happy to find this tempeh at Grocery Outlet. I used to get this pre-marinated tempeh relatively often years ago (maybe 15?) but it’s been rebranded since its “fakin bacon” days. I think anyone looking for a realistic vegan bacon would be severely disappointed with this tempeh but, to be fair, I’m not sure anyone would expect that if they are already familiar with tempeh.
I typically flavor tempeh myself but sometimes it’s nice to have a protein source that’s just “ready to go” on busy or lazy days. Lightlife is my fave brand for tempeh as I find it to be less bitter than other brands. This seasoned version is quite smoky! It is nice to use in a sandwich or salad or to crumble up and add to roasted veggies or a dish that would be complimented by a smoky flavor. If you don’t care for liquid smoke this might not be the product for you, but I don’t find it too strong when mixed in with other items.
