What do you get when you mix a dark and morbid curiosity with an innocent, cruelty-free dish? Vegan shark fin soup.
Though initially I was shocked to see this on the menu, the sobering realisation that all meat dishes are shocking in their cruelty dawned on me shortly after, so I ordered it to try something completely new.
Being a kind of starter soup it was on the small side, with just a few ingredients. The surface of the soup had a kind of gelatinous film, resembling what probably would be the melted collagen/cartilage from the shark fin part of the original soup. The broth was tasty and contained some vermicelli rice noodles, herbs, and long slithers of bean curd skin, carrot, shiitake mushroom, and vegan ham. The mouth-feel of the soup might be a turn-off for you so keep that in mind when ordering. Overall, a uniquely tasty starter soup!
