Breakfast Bowl from @4th&State It seems important that I preface that this review and its pictures are from 2021, and that the Breakfast Bowl has changed at 4th & State. I had wanted to start a vegan food blog years before I created my Abillion account, and its carbon-copy Instagram account. This is actually the first review I've written (though it's been edited before posting), and I still wanted to share it as it is quite the throwback for me! Perhaps I will review the new iteration at a later date. This is a signature menu item from Downtown Columbus vegan diner 4th & State. Scrambled JUST Egg , sauteed peppers and onions, Trader Joe's soy chorizo, home fries and pico de gallo with a drizzle of chipotle aioli and sour cream. House-made Guacamole comes separate and is an added charge of $2.00. Like most things on the 4th and State menu, the grocery store staples are center stage. I remember hearing that 4th is actually the top buyer of Just. Egg products. Based on the volume of business they receive annually, and how many menu items use it, I would have to say that sounds right. In any case, I think the Just. Egg was cooked fully, and tasted indistinguishable to its nonvegan counterpart. I love love carbs and for me the home fries hit a home run, all bases loaded. Good amount of seasoning on them, peppery with a hint of garlic and what I assume is paprika? Though that might also be coming from the Soy chorizo. Speaking of the chorizo, I thought it tasted pleasant, with a decent spicy kick to it (that paprika!). Can't forget about the chipotle aioli and sour cream, which tie the whole dish together with the addition of moisture (a bite without sauce is almost unbearably dry), contrasting flavors, and colorful finishing touches. As is often the case for many dishes, there were some things I found to be a bit lackluster. For instance, I thought the sauteed vegetables were okay; I didn't mind them but they were kind of just 'there'. Did not really notice any productive addition to the overall composition of the dish but I'm sure at a minimum they make it more nutritious. The same goes for the pico de gallo; just was not much flavor aside from the taste of lime juice. It wasn't terrible, but could use more spice to it. I would recommend adding black pepper and jalapenos, as it very mild. All in all, I rate this 8/10. A few points deducted as I believe it would benefit from stronger flavors, and the ratio of house-made to store bought ingredients is skewed too far on the store-bought side for my liking. Regardless, the 4th & State breakfast bowl has a great portion size, pretty plating (eyes ate first with this one), and is overall savory and satisfying. This makes a great alternative for those days when you're sick of having pancakes or french toast for your Sunday brunch.
