Don’t worry if you don’t understand a word of French or break your tongue on Dutch. These are nutritional yeast flakes. You won’t normally eat spoonfuls of this product, but rather use it to sprinkle over steamed or cooked vegetables, pasta or add it into sauces. Sometimes yeast flakes are an ingredient for home made vegan cheeses or vegan omelettes (frittata).
Taste/bite: A nutty and salty, even slightly cheezy 🧀 taste. These flakes from Origami are very finely ground.
Ingredients: Organic dried yeast flakes. 👌Rich in protein: 27 g per 100 g of product. 👉Contains a number of valuable essential vitamins: vitamin B1 and vitamin B2. These flakes from Origami also mention the presence of vitamin B12, but as this is only 1,3 micrograms per 100 g of product, it’s only a trace. Mind you,100 g is half of the package! So warning/disclaimer: even if there is some vitamin B12 to be found in certain yeast flakes, don’t consider this enough for your regular intake as a vegan. You must take a supplement on a regular basis. For instance: in 1 tiny tablet of my every other day Vegetology slow release vitamin B 12 supplement, there is 1000 micrograms of B12.
Shape/Conditioning: Minimalist brown paper bag with stickers containing all necessary information. The inner lining of the bag looks and feels like plastic but could be a compostable biopolymer. There is no info on the package.
Price: I paid 6,72 € (April 2023), for 200 g. You will probably not use this nutritionally interesting condiment in high quantities so a package like this may last pretty long. Not cheap but definitely worth the money thanks to its versatility.👍👍👍
The serving suggestion shows the flakes on cooked #edamame beans, combined with sea salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar, onion powder and some olive oil.
The brand is Belgian 🇧🇪. They have a high level standard range of organic products, mainly cereals and cereal flakes, legumes, mueslis, flours, seeds for germination and sprouting and dried fruits. They used to be known by the name Vajra, and recently modernized their look and changed their brand’s commercial name to Origami.
