EXPENSIVE, PLAIN TASTING & INGREDIENT LOADED GLUTEN FREE WRAPS
Surprisingly, Schär is an Italian brand (and not German!) that has been surfing on the gluten free hype for decades. In general, these are unusual, a bit techy recipes that prioritize the gluten free aspect but tend to have in my opinion a boring and plain flavour.
Taste/bite: Neutral, a bit dry and powderish sensation in the mouth. Soft bite.
Ingredients: Vegan although not labelled as such. Not organic. For something as simple as a wrap, this has a lot of ingredients … Gluten Free: the flour used is rice. Items made from rice flour are brittle by nature, as there is no elasticity from gluten. To enhance the product’s elasticity, the following humidifying agents are added: psyllium husk and sorbitol, an guar gum and carob flour as emulsifiers. There are a lot more other additives. There is some soy protein added. Very low in sugar (only 1,5 g per 100 g). The fats are vegan margarine and – what a pity: palm oil.
Shape/Conditioning: The single sheet airtight plastic film package contains two wraps of 80 g each. Don’t fold when cold: As I tried to test their suppleness before heating and folded one of them, it broke. This feature disappears when you heat them gently first and become more easy to manipulate, roll and fold.
Price: I paid 3,29 € (January 2023), for a total weight of 160 g (= two wraps). OMG that is expensive if you realize how easy and quickly you can make wraps from scratch, gluten free or not ...
The Schär brand is Italian and wraps are made in the German speaking northern part of Italy. Their products visually stand out in stores because everything is bright yellow, their trademark colour.
