I’m excited to tell you about Szabad Bisztró a totally plant-based bar and restaurant in Budapest. I was on an overnight work trip last week and put vegan food in the search engine. After work and a quiet 15 minute walk to this ‘laid-back vegan bar and restaurant with an adorably bohemian spirit’ (to quote Offbeat Budapest’s review) I was hungry and rewarded with a very tasty beet burger. There were layers of green salad and a creamy, mayo-type sauce on a chunky flavourful beetroot burger sandwiched between two substantial circles of flatbread. I was on my own and felt relaxed in the room decorated with paintings, and whacky pop art objects. It’s a dog friendly establishment- bowls of water at the ready and dog biscuit treats in a jar. Three dogs appeared with their companions while I was there. They are always entertaining clientele. If I’d been staying another night I would’ve gone back and tried another dish. Thanks Szabad (translates as free) you made a London traveller feel welcome and very happy to find a vegan haven.
