If you’re in Zurich, Hiltl is a must visit place for vegans! While the food is damn delicious, none of the desserts impressed us.
They’re apparently the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant. And they have loads of clearly labelled vegan options. (Well, not clearly labelled actually, but I’ll come to that later.)
It’s a pay-by-weight buffet concept. As with all things Switzerland, it’s quite pricey. But that didn’t keep us from visiting there twice.
Their vegan options are flavourful and creative. You can see they make an effort at it.
I wish they had a separate vegan section though. Instead of placing the vegan dishes in between the ones containing dairy and egg. (Yeah they’re not strictly vegetarian, they’re eggitarian).
Unfortunately on our last visit there was a mix up with the allergen labels. There was a non-vegan brownie with the correct label on one side and a wrongly vegan one on the other side.
It contained both dairy and eggs. Serious allergens.
Mistakes happen sometimes, it’s understandable. But what wasn’t right was the dismissive attitude about this from the chefs and front end staff!
Only the manager came out at the end and apologised politely. But really the damage was done by then. He did assure us this was a one off thing and that they have multiple meetings each day to ensure everything is labelled correctly.
It was our last day in Zurich. So I can’t honestly tell you if I would’ve gone back there or not if my stay had been longer.
In the balance of damn tasty vegan food vs shitty service…it’s hard to say which way the scales might tip.
I do still recommend Haus Hiltl to vegans. Just be careful to double check labels. Especially the brownie.
