That’s right, it’s vegan SPAM. Everything from the can, down to the thick gelatinous texture and porky taste, it’s SPAM. Since ditching buying plastic-packaged food more than a year ago, getting my hands on vegan fake meat products has been quite a challenge. So on the very rare occasion I spot tofu or tempeh in a jar, or vegan meat in a can, I pounce on it. This was $4 from my local bulk food store and the last one on the shelf, so I had to get it. I’ve tried the UnMeat brand before in South Korea, but I think this is the first time trying it’s SPAM product. I’ve never had traditional pork SPAM, but I think this is the closest thing you’ll get to it vegan. It’s not completely homogenous and has some grain to it. It does have a kind of pork taste to it, but it loses flavour over time if you cook it for any length such as chopped in a pasta sauce like I did. It grills nicely, so yes it’s best using at as a sandwich meat or a filling for dumplings or ravioli.
