Many traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi) and desserts are naturally vegan, especially the older recipes. Unfortunately, more businesses have started incorporating dairy products into their offerings.
However, there is a place that has been selling mitarashi dango for over three centuries!! and has remained true to the original recipe. #Dango are essentially rice balls that are pounded and boiled. #Mitarashi dango, a specific type of dango, are roasted and served with a sweet soy sauce glaze, accompanied by hot tea. It's a delightful treat that's not overly sweet and perfectly balanced. Yum.
