To preface, I’m not usually a fan of mock meats. I don’t miss the texture of meat and usually prefer a more veggie-centric option. SocialNature generously allowed me to try this product for free in exchange for a review, which is why I tried it out in the first place! It was fun to try something new and it challenged me to be creative in the kitchen! I made vegan chicken lettuce wraps with this item and they turned out well! The product is already cooked and soaked up my sauce and seasoning very well. I tried a piece unseasoned and it didn’t have any distinct taste. The texture is similar to what I remember chicken being like, it had a shreddy softer texture. It seems to be reminiscent of setian, which I don’t really like. So I think that’s why this product on its own was just ok to me. If you’re a fan of setian or you miss chicken, I think you’d definitely enjoy this product! However, when I ate it in a meal (vegan chicken Asian lettuce wraps and Asian salad bowl) I actually really enjoyed it as a component! I don’t love that the product has ingredients like sugar and canola oil, but appreciate the high protein content and the plain flavor option which allows it to become a blank canvas for whatever dish you’re making! I imagine that you could get really creative with this product and replicate nostalgic meals from pre-vegan days! This would probably also be a great product for individuals who are plant-curious or want to cut down on their meat consumption, while still enjoying food that is somewhat familiar to them. Overall, it was fun to try something new and keep my meal preps interesting with a new recipe!
If you’re curious about the lettuce wraps:
I made both an Asian- seasoned vegan chicken and onion filling and a mushroom, lentil, onion filling to alternate between! I generously filled up the lettuce boats with brown rice, the protein mixture of choice, triple C slaw (made with shredded cabbage, carrots, cilantro, red pepper flakes, and lime), avocado or peanut sauce, and then garnished with cilantro and lime! Messy but delicious!
