Great alternative to cane sugar, beet sugar is vegan. Cane sugar sometimes isn't, because it is whitened using bone char. This sugar is made from beets grown organically to Demeter (biodynamic) standards in Germany. There's no difference in taste as far as I can tell, but I only use small amounts for baking.
