If you love pulut hitam, you’re in for a real treat because this is one of the better ones. Thick, creamy, rich, with plump and chewy black rice and a hint of saltiness to balance out the gentle sweetness.

The rich and creamy coconut sauce pairs wonderfully with the smokey and juicy flame-grilled king oyster mushrooms. Delicious with rice! However, the mushrooms might be a bit tough to chew (due to its nature), and the sauce was slightly insufficient in my opinion, and which made it a little less satisfying.

One of my favourite dishes at Violet Oon. Full of flavour, aromatic with a mildly spicy kick. The slight crunch from kangkong and the crispy belinjo nut crackers added to the textural experience.

Wow! Jenga-like in stature, majestic in taste - this umami-filled stack of grilled oyster mushrooms BE the highlight of Violet Oon's plant-based menu. Came with turmeric coconut sauce that was just so mildly spiced, but unfortunately still too spicy for the chili-averse daughter. 🌶️ Also unfortunately, since we were way past the kid's bedtime and her eyes were more glazed than the skin of a donut, we had to bolt home soon after this dish, even before dessert was served. 😭 So that makes no just desserts for us, just no desserts. 🙃

Aromatic vegetable coconuty curry with veggies like cabbage, carrots and long beans, though I found the gravy a tad watery for my liking. Also could be down to the luck of the scoop, but I did not detect any tempeh though it is stated as present in the menu. I am quite a tempeh fiend 👹, so -

Initially mistook the bamboo shoots in this homely-looking dish for yam. The star of the show though, were the shiitake mushrooms - plump and full of flavour from the simmering braised fermented soybean stew with cloves and cinnamon. I enjoyed this thoroughly, though it seemed like an acquired taste since my dining companions didn't seem to take to it as much.

Caught myself talking like Uncle Roger marveling at how full of 'wok hei' (smoke aroma) this #kidapproved non-spicy fried rice carried. You can request for the dish to be spicy or non-spicy - we had both versions at our table since the irrepressible daughter was there with us 😄. This came with tofu cubes and the way delish, way underrated kangkung #leafygreens, also known as water spinach.

Love the fresh julienned cucumber strips and beansprouts, less a fan of the #veganfriendly peanuty sauce which tasted very 'prawn-y' to me (traditionally, the tauhu goreng sauce that goes atop the deepfried tofu does have shrimp paste in it).
